Faroy Candles
Faroy candles are known throughout the world and it is amazing how this business got started. It came about when two young college friends found themselves without gifts to give at Christmas and decided to make something themselves. They were very poor so they decided that candles would be the cheapest projects they could afford at the time.
The candles turned out better than they could have imagined and it wasn’t long before a buyer from a Houston fashion store saw one of their candles and asked them to make him some for Neiman Marcus, which they did. Stanley Marcus also suggested they take their creations to New York and show the manufacturers there. This didn’t work as planned, but when they took their candles to Boston they became an instant hit.
Meanwhile back at home, the orders were pouring in and it became a very busy place. So much so that both Preston Frazier and Addison McElroy had to quit what they were doing and give their full attention to making candles. The only other employee they had that worked all year around and only got paid on Christmas was Frazier’s mother.
When Neiman’s ran an ad for their candles, they had to come up with a name so they took the name Faroy, which was taken from the names Frazier an McElroy. The candles that they made back then cannot be made today because of the labor intensity that was put into them at that time where they poured and carved each candle by hand. However, the present day Faroy puts out very beautiful candles for the consumer to enjoy.
Although Faroy has merged with bigger companies they are still on the market and Frazier is still in the business. Although McElroy retired a few years ago, Frazier’s plan is to follow Addison to retirement in the very near future.
